The School: The Bishop’s Stortford High School
The Bishop’s Stortford High School is a specialist school in Mathematics and Computing at the forefront of teaching and learning in Hertfordshire LEA, It caters for boy students aged 11-18 years, and admits boys and girls into the sixth form. There are presently some 1100 pupils at the school including 330 students in the sixth form of whom 100 are girls. The school has invested in a purpose-built ICT suite called the Turing Suite to provide a high-quality teaching and learning environment for its students and the wider local community and regularly opens its doors to showcase the advanced and aspirational aspects of its teaching and learning facilities.

The Challenges:
Provide a high quality teaching and learning ICT environment in a new purpose-built suite that will improve everyone’s way of learning - must be flexible and future-proof and provide a facility that is available to the wider local community.

The Constraints:
ICT equipment must be Future-Proof; must offer safe, secure and robust solution for students and; for out of hours use must be flexible to allow expansion.

The Solution:
62 i-desk Classic PC Desks configured in back to back interconnecting rows, with 2 i-desk teacher workstations linked to interactive whiteboards. “The installation of i-desk in our Turing Suite provides us with top PC performance combined with a unique and innovative design that allows us to maximise the space available and has provided the school with a state-of-the-art facility that enables us to establish closer links with private sector sponsors, local businesses and higher education institutions as well as improving everyone’s way of learning.

Since installing the i-desk solutions, the Suite is in constant demand from teachers and students alike.

Paul Noble – Deputy Head The Bishop’s Stortford High School

The Conclusion:

The i-desk installation in the Turing Suite comprises a total of 62 i-desk Classic PC desks installed in two classrooms within the suite providing 30 i-desk PC desks for students plus a designated teacher station in each room. Each teacher station is linked to interactive whiteboards.

Desks are in a back-to-back configuration, connected together using i-desk’s jigsaw arrangement that also locks the desks together. Up to 10 i-desk PC desks can be connected to a single power socket and network point, which contributes to a significant cost saving for each installation compared to stand-alone PCs as well as making it quicker and simpler to complete the installation.

With the PC components installed in a special cassette contained and locked into place within the desk chassis, i-desk provides a high level of security for the equipment making it theft-proof and virtually vandal-proof, which protects the schools investment and allows the facility to be made available outside of the normal school hours to run specialist courses for the local community.

Deputy Head, John Noble, commenting on the new i-desk installation; “The Turing Suite has become a popular destination for teachers and students and for other schools in the area to visit and see i-desk in action and just
how it improves everyone’s way of working. The i-desk integrated PC desking solution provides the ideal setting for teachers and students to excel and delivers on everything we need to provide a compelling professional environment that can be used for our full-time students as well as for the specialist computing and ICT courses we offer to the wider community.”

Paul Noble concludes; “The deployment of i-desk in the Turing Suite has been very successful and we are confident that the future-proof and flexible design of the i-desk solution will make it easy and cost-effective to upgrade the computer specification and expand or modify the layouts over time. We will certainly be undertaking a review of the School’s other ICT facilities to see how i-desk can continue to help us improve everyone’s way of working.”
